The inside has two main compartments. The rear one has a space for a laptop and a space for other items (books, whatever). The front large compartment has a net that divides it into two. Besides the two small pockets visible just below the flap, there is one more thin one that has spaces for a cell phone, pens, and cards--you could also put papers, a little book, and other small objects in that pocket. I bought this backpack for it's look and ability to carry a laptop. I had no idea what kinds of pockets/compartments were in it, so I'm glad I get to tell others.
